Hawaii Island police arrested 18 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant between April 13 through Sunday. Six of the drivers were involved with traffic crashes and one of the drivers was younger than 21.
Hawaii Island police arrested 18 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant between April 13 through Sunday. Six of the drivers were involved with traffic crashes and one of the drivers was younger than 21.
Four drivers were arrested in the Kona District, according to the Hawaii Police Department. Two drivers were arrested in Ka‘u, three in Puna, and nine in South Hilo.
So far this year, there have been 289 DUI arrests compared with 404 during the same period last year, a decrease of 28.5 percent.
There have been 412 major accidents so far this year compared with 511 during the same period last year, a decrease of 19.4 percent.
To date there have been seven traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with four during the same period last year, an increase of 75 percent.
Four fatalities were related to drugs and three were a combination of alcohol and drugs.
